Our verdict
Movistar El Salvador suits anyone in El Salvador who wants to buy from the network itself rather than a virtual operator, with plans at $1.25 a month and unlimited data at $1.50. The trade-off is the long commitment at 24 months and a credit check.

Pros and cons
Pros
- On unlimited price the brand ranks 3 of 173 brands tracked, a strong placing for heavy users.
- Sim only, eSIM and 5G are all available, with hotspot sharing on the same lines.
- Data rollover carries unused data into the next cycle, so a light month is not wasted.
- Billing covers contract and prepaid, so prepaid and contract buyers are both served.
Cons
- Contract plans run 24 months, a long tie for anyone still choosing a provider.
- A credit check is required, so approval rests on your file.
- The entry price of $1.25 sits above Lonestar Cell MTN at $0.20.
- Roaming is paid rather than included, so use abroad adds a separate charge.
Who it suits
- People in El Salvador who want the network operator itself rather than an intermediary, since the seller type is network.
- Heavy data users who accept a 24 month contract in exchange for unlimited plans at $1.50.
- Travellers who will pay for roaming, given coverage across 72 countries.
Who should look elsewhere
- Not for buyers focused purely on entry price, since Lonestar Cell MTN opens at $0.20.
- Not for anyone wanting rolling monthly billing: Movistar El Salvador bills contract and prepaid, while yesss also works on contract, rolling and prepaid.
What it does well
Sim only lines are sold and eSIM is supported, so a handset does not have to be bundled with the plan. 5G is available and hotspot sharing is offered, which lets a phone act as the data source for a laptop. Data rollover is included, so unused data carries into the next cycle instead of expiring. Roaming reaches 72 countries. Signing up does mean a credit check, which is the one step that can hold up a new line.
Where it sits among rivals
On starting price, Movistar El Salvador sits at 22 of 258 brands ranked, a middle placing rather than a headline figure. Unlimited price tells a different story: 3 of 173 brands ranked is close to the front of the list. Heavy data users therefore get a much better deal than the entry price alone suggests, and the two rankings point in opposite directions.
Who runs it
The plans are sold by TELEFONICA MOVILES EL SALVADOR, S.A. DE C.V., based in El Salvador. Buying from the operator itself means the contract, the network and the support desk sit in one place, which suits people who want a single point of contact. Support runs through chat, phone and email, so help is reachable in several ways rather than one.

Frequently asked questions
What do Movistar El Salvador plans cost at the start?+
Plans start at $1.25 a month and unlimited plans at $1.50. On starting price the brand ranks 22 of 258, while the unlimited price ranks 3 of 173 brands tracked. Buyers shopping on entry price should also weigh Lonestar Cell MTN at $0.20.
Which plans are on offer and what do they include?+
The reference plans are Plan Ilimitado Streaming, a contract plan with a monthly data cap, Plan Ilimitado Datos, which is unlimited, and Plan Ilimitado Total, also unlimited on contract terms of 24 months. Unused data carries into the next cycle through data rollover, so a quiet month is not simply lost. 5G and hotspot sharing are supported alongside them.
Do I need to buy a handset with the line?+
Sim only lines are sold, and eSIM is supported, so no new phone is needed to start. Billing covers contract and prepaid, so both contract and prepaid Sim only arrangements are possible. A separate handset only becomes relevant for people who want 5G ready hardware or a newer device of their own.
How long am I tied in?+
Contract plans run 24 months, which is a long tie for anyone still weighing up providers. Billing also covers prepaid, so a shorter commitment is possible on that side. A credit check applies when signing up, so approval rests on your file before any contract gets under way.
Does joining involve a credit check?+
Yes, a credit check is required, so applications are assessed before a line is set up. It matters most on the contract side, where terms run 24 months and billing covers contract and prepaid. Anyone without a clear credit history should raise the prepaid side of the range with the operator before choosing.
What happens to costs when I travel?+
Roaming is paid rather than included in the monthly fee, so use abroad adds a separate charge. The network covers 72 countries, which is broad reach, but the charge decides the bill. Travellers on a tight budget should price the roaming before settling on a plan.
Who runs Movistar El Salvador and how do I reach them?+
Plans are sold by TELEFONICA MOVILES EL SALVADOR, S.A. DE C.V., a company based in El Salvador. Support runs through chat, phone and email, so help is available in several ways rather than a single channel. Contract terms, roaming charges and billing questions can all be raised with the same operator.
Is the network set up for heavy use?+
5G is available and hotspot sharing is offered, so a phone can hand data to a laptop or tablet. The seller type is network, which means service and support come from the operator running the network. Plans are sold in El Salvador, so these features apply within that market.
