Pros and cons
MobileX
Pros
- Build Your Own starts at $3.88 on a plan where the data allowance is set by the customer
- Plans run 1 month, so there is no long term to serve
- Unlimited talk and text plans start at $14.88
Cons
- European roaming is paid, so travel adds cost rather than arriving with the plan
- The seller type is mvno, so service runs over a host network and local coverage needs checking
- Coverage is listed for US, so anyone who needs service across several countries should look wider
Movistar Mexico
Pros
- Entry is genuinely low: prepaid top-ups start at MXN 10, and prepaid and contract billing are offered together (contract and prepaid).
- Unlimited data on the Pro Ilimitado plan costs MXN 300, while capped tiers are listed at lower monthly prices for lighter users.
- Unused data rolls over, so a capped month that ends early keeps its balance for the next one instead of losing it.
Cons
- Roaming is paid, so any of the 200 countries covered adds cost on top of the monthly plan price.
- The range is sold in Mexico, so it carries no weight for anyone living or long staying elsewhere.
- Support runs on chat, phone and help centre only, so email is not among the listed ways to reach the operator.
Who each suits
MobileX
Who it suits
- Residents of US who want a prepaid plan with no long contract
- People who want unlimited talk and text from $14.88
- Readers who want an eSIM, rollover data and hotspot sharing on a flexible plan
Who should look elsewhere
- GETESA readers who would rather buy from a network than a mvno
- Lonestar Cell MTN readers who want the network itself rather than a virtual brand
- Travellers who need roaming inside the monthly plan, since European roaming is paid
Movistar Mexico
Who it suits
- Mexican households that want prepaid top-ups and monthly contracts from the same network (contract and prepaid).
- People who want unlimited data plus eSIM and 5G without handing over a new handset.
- Travellers heading to MX who are content to pay for roaming across 200 countries.
Who should look elsewhere
- Anyone who wants a rolling monthly bill, since yesss! bills on a rolling basis alongside contract and prepaid (contract, rolling and prepaid).
- Shoppers outside MX, who would do better reading a quote from GETESA, which offers prepaid and contract billing (prepaid and contract).
- Buyers after the smallest possible entry payment, who should put Lonestar Cell MTN, listed from $0.20, next to it on the table.

Questions about each
MobileX
What is the cheapest MobileX plan?+
Build Your Own starts at $3.88 and you set the data allowance on it yourself. The published reference prices for the plans are monthly and month to month, so that entry figure is the ongoing figure rather than a promotional rate that changes later. A reader comparing a low headline price with a long contract deal is comparing two different structures here, not two stages of one sale.
Does MobileX use contracts or lock-ins?+
No long term is attached. Billing is prepaid and rolling and plans sit at 1 month, the short contract length that flexible mobile deals tend to use. Nothing ties you in for a year, so a reader who wants to change plan or walk away can do so without serving out a term first.
Movistar Mexico
What does it cost to get started?+
A prepaid top-up from MXN 10 is the entry point, and it carries no handset commitment. That suits a short stay in Mexico, a second line or a light month of browsing. The range lists prepaid and contract billing together (contract and prepaid), so contract customers pay a monthly fee instead of topping up.
How much is unlimited data?+
Unlimited data sits on the Pro Ilimitado plan at MXN 300 a month. It is the plan for anyone who streams, works from a phone or shares a connection without watching a data counter, and it removes the need to choose a capped tier. Capped plans are listed beside it at lower monthly prices.
